1. Definition of AI

AI can be broadly categorized into two types:
- Narrow AI: These are systems that are designed to carry out specific tasks, such as voice recognition. These systems can only learn or be taught how to do specific tasks.
- General AI: These systems surpass narrow AI in that they can perform any intellectual task that a human being can. They can understand, learn, adapt, and implement knowledge from different domains. However, as of my last update in 2021, General AI was still largely theoretical and subject of ongoing research.
3. Subfields of AI
AI encompasses several interrelated fields, including:
- Machine Learning (ML): This is an application of AI that provides systems the ability to learn from data without being explicitly programmed. ML uses statistical techniques to enable machines to improve with experience.
- Deep Learning: This is a subset of ML that uses artificial neural networks with multiple abstraction layers to simulate human decision-making.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP): This involves the interaction between computers and human language. It’s how AI understands and generates human language.

AI has a wide range of applications. It’s used in virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, recommendation systems used by Netflix and Amazon, autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis systems, stock trading systems, and much more.
